Why Birds Settle Here

Front and Centre, Never an Afterthought.

Purrfect's bird area sits where Kim and the team pass throughout the day. Birds are checked as the work of the hotel continues around them, rather than being left alone in a quiet spare room between visits.

  • Human attention is matched to your bird's temperament and normal routine
  • Birds can hear and respond to one another while remaining safely in individual cages
  • Cages are moved promptly when rain, cold or direct sun makes the garden unsuitable
  • Wary birds are approached quietly and never forced to interact

Kim owns macaws, African Greys, a cockatoo, Amazons and a Jardine's parrot. Her experience includes hatching and hand-rearing birds, as well as caring for elderly, unwanted and difficult-to-handle parrots.

A Normal Day and Night

A Predictable Rhythm from First Light to Covers On.

Weather may change where the day is spent, but the order of care remains familiar.

  1. Wake, clean, breakfast

Lights on, covers off and cages cleaned before birds move in their cages to the attached garden for breakfast.

  2. Noon

    Treat and water check

Owner-supplied favourite treats are offered. Water bowls are checked and refilled as needed.

  3. Indoors and top-up

Birds return indoors in their cages and receive food and fresh water before the evening settles.

  4. Covers on, lights out

After early-evening social time and gentle background television, every cage is covered until 07:00.

Housing and Hygiene

Space Between Cages. Separation Between Species.

Each cage stays at least one metre from the next. Cages, perches, bowls, play equipment and cleaning equipment are not shared between birds from different households.

  • Hands are disinfected between cages during feeding, cleaning and care
  • Cages, bowls, floors and the indoor night room are cleaned daily
  • The daily hygiene routine uses a light F10 mist; rental cages are washed and F10-disinfected between guests
  • Dogs occupy a completely different private area; cats remain in their separate indoor suites
  • Bird cages remain securely locked and covered indoors overnight

Health requirement: Purrfect cannot accept a bird with psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD). Birds under two require a PBFD-free certificate.

If a bird appears unwell at arrival, check-in pauses until the owner provides a veterinarian's health certificate.

Food, Handling and Health

Care Follows the Bird You Know.

The booking form is where you tell Kim what your bird eats, accepts, dislikes and needs.

Food and water

Avi Complete Maintenance is supplied for parrots, with species-appropriate maintenance food for other birds. Food and fresh water are served twice daily and bowls are refilled if empty.

Bring favourite treats, cooked meals and any special or prescription diet. Your instructions will be followed.

Handling and enrichment

Familiar toys, puzzles, perches and covers are welcome. Birds leave their cages only at the owner's request, with Kim or qualified staff, inside the double-gated indoor area.

Flighted, clipped, elderly, feather-plucking or difficult-to-handle birds can be discussed before booking.

Medication and emergencies

Oral and prescribed injectable medication, eye drops and ointments can be administered by arrangement without a medication fee. Hand-feeding is quoted separately and owners supply the food.

In an emergency, the owner is called immediately and the bird is transported to an avian and exotics veterinarian when needed.

Accepted Birds

From Budgies to Macaws.

Regular guests include African Greys, Amazons, Jardine's parrots, Senegal parrots, macaws, cockatoos, cockatiels, budgerigars, canaries, pionus and lovebirds.

Parrot Boarding FAQ

The Questions Worth Asking Before You Book.

Must my bird arrive in its own cage?

No. Your bird can arrive in its own cage or in a secure, appropriately sized carrier. Rental cages are available from budgie to large macaw or cockatoo size for R10 per night. Stands, perches and night covers are available, and you are welcome to bring a familiar named cover.

Which health records does my bird need?

Purrfect cannot accept a bird with psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD). Birds under two need a PBFD-free certificate. If a bird appears unwell on arrival, check-in can continue only once the owner supplies a veterinarian's health certificate.

Are birds separated from dogs and cats?

Yes. Dogs stay in a completely different private area and cats stay indoors in their own secure, climate-controlled suites. Bird cages remain securely locked, at least one metre apart and within the dedicated bird area.

What food is included?

Purrfect supplies Avi Complete Maintenance for parrots and appropriate maintenance food for other bird species. Food and fresh water are served twice daily and refilled when needed. Owners supply favourite treats, cooked meals and any special or prescription diet.

Will my bird be taken out of its cage?

Only at the owner's request. Out-of-cage time is supervised by Kim or qualified staff inside the double-gated indoor area. Birds may also leave their cage for pre-arranged wing, beak or nail care.

How often will I receive updates?

Messages and photographs are generally sent every two to three days. Frequency can vary during the busiest holiday periods.

What happens if my bird becomes ill?

Purrfect contacts the owner immediately. A bird showing signs of infectious illness is transported to an avian and exotics veterinarian. If the owner cannot be reached, transport still goes ahead and the owner remains responsible for veterinary and transport costs under the booking terms.

How early should I book?

Parrot boarding is available throughout the year. December fills first and should be booked as early as possible. For Easter, allow at least one month where possible. All arrivals and collections are by appointment between 08:00 and 17:00.
